Gin & Tonic

A good gin and tonic depends on the relationship between botanicals, bitterness, bubbles and temperature. This home version uses a measured amount of tonic so the gin remains recognizable, with cucumber as a simple garnish suited to a floral gin such as Hendrick’s. It is a general classic recipe rather than Beiruty’s exact pour. Fill the glass generously with solid ice and chill the tonic before opening it. A gentle stir is enough to bring the ingredients together; vigorous mixing only loses the carbonation that gives this highball its crisp finish.

Ingredients

  • 45 ml Hendrick’s gin or another dry gin
  • 120 ml chilled tonic water
  • 150 g ice cubes
  • 3 thin cucumber slices, about 15 g

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass or large stemmed glass with the ice.

  2. Add the gin and slide the cucumber slices against the inside of the glass.

  3. Pour the tonic slowly over the ice.

  4. Lift the mixture gently once with a long spoon and serve immediately.

Make it your own.

  • Use tonic water rather than soda water; its bitterness is part of the recipe.
  • For a juniper-led gin, a thin lime wheel can replace the cucumber without changing the proportions.
